Genre: Hip-hop & House
What is Hiphop?
Hip hop originated from African American music. Rising from the 1970's in the Bronx of New York City, Hip-hop spread through out America along side the Hip hop culture. Based on concepts of beat boxing, looping, scratching, rapping and free styling hip hop developed in to the 21st century. Hip-hop grew influential thus legends such as the Notorious B.I.G and Tupac rose.

What is House?
When researching House music genre, I discovered that it first originated in Chicago, Illinois, USA in the early 1980’s. Catering first to the African-American, Latino American, and gay communities in Chicago then moving west toward Europe. As it reached Europe the genre became infused with elements of pop and dance music creating a whole new funky rhythm in the music industry. Now in the 21st century house music if commonly played at raves and clubs as it is fast paced and up-tempo, making a person’s adrenaline race with a need to dance. In Kid Cudi’s song – Day N Nite; he infuses House and Hip-hop to create a vibrant high tech beat that is over played with vocals that are uncommon in house music. The use of his club beat makes the song seem fun whereas his lyrics give the song an element of seriousness as the artist sings of his loneliness and his use of weed to forget about his problems. Overall the song contradicts itself through its lyrics and instrumental, this is a first in Cudi’s normal music boundaries. Cudi as an artist has explore different conventions in different genres and infused them together to create this song. This is one of the reasons we want to work with this song and create an unconventional video.
The song "Day & Nite" is based in the genre of Hip hop and House:
Day and Nite is a fusion of hip hop and house. This video is a second version, produced in the UK. Cudi is the star image in the song, he plays the part of a shop keeper who is daydreaming and in a fantasy which includes beautiful women dancing for him. With the use of dancing and performance shots and sexy clothing the women capture the viewer’s eye. The lyrics in the song compliment the video. The lyrics "lonely stonier" relate well to Cudi. In the video Cudi looks as though he has been smoking weed and is stoned, thus inducing fantasies. The music video harmonizes with the conventions of the hip hop genre. Below are some of the main conventions that are exposed in many hip hop music videos.

- Champagne splashed across women in Bikinis
- Star Image of the artist
- Money thrown over women
- Women dancing on cars
- Singer driving a sports car
- Women singers also wear sexy clothing
- The singers have chunky gold and silver jewellery
- Clothing is designer and flash
- The locations are glamorous mansions, nightclubs etc…
In out music video hip hop is the main genre.

Forms and Conventions of a Music Video
Music Video Convention's
GENERAL THEORY
Lyrics: establish a general feeling/mood/sense of subject rather than a meaning
Music: tempo often drives the editing
Genre: might be reflected in types of mise-en-scene, themes, performance, camera and editing styles
Camerawork: has an impact on meaning. Movement, angle and shot distance all play a part in the representation of the artist/band (close-ups dominate)
Editing: the most common form is fast-cut montage, rendering many of the images impossible to grasp on first viewing, so ensuring multiple viewing. Often enhancing the editing are digital effects, which play with the original images to offer different kinds of pleasure for the audience.
Intersexuality: not all audiences will spot a reference, which would not significantly detract from their pleasure in the text itself, but greater pleasure might be derived by those who recognise the reference and feel flattered by this. It also increases the audience’s engagement with, and attentiveness to the product. Many music videos draw upon cinema:
Madonna’s Material Girl drew on the song sequence Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend in Howard Hawk’s Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
2Pac and Dr Dre’s California Love, which referenced George Miller’s Mad Max
Exhibitionism: The apparently more powerful independent female artists of recent years have added to the complexity of the politics of looking and gender/cultural debates, by being at once sexually provocative and apparently in control of, and inviting, a sexualised gaze.
ANDREW GOODWIN’S THEORY
Visuals either illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics and music
Genres often have their own music style/iconography
Close-ups should always be included
The artist/band might want to develop their own star iconography, which becomes their star image

Goodwin argues that the female performer is frequently objectified principally for display purposes, often through a combination of camerawork and editing with fragmented body shots emphasising a sexualised treatment of the star.

There needs to be a strong and coherent relationship between narrative and performance in music promos.
Music videos will cut between a narrative and a performance of the song by the band
A carefully choreographed dance might be part of the artist’s performance or an extra aspect of the video designed to aid visualisation and the ‘repeatability’ factor.
JOHN STEWART’S THEORY
The music video has the aesthetics of a TV commercial, with lots of close-ups and lighting being used to focus on the star’s face.
He sees visual reference in music video as coming from a range of sources, although the three most frequent are perhaps cinema, fashion and art photography.
Stewart’s description of the music video as ‘incorporating, raiding and reconstructing’ is essentially the essence of Intersexuality, using something with which the audience may be familiar, to generate both nostalgic associations and new meanings.
The video allows more access to the performer than a stage performance can. The mise-en-scene, in particular, can be used to emphasise an aspirational lifestyle.

Project - Time Line
Timeline and Project plan:
Research -
To begin with we are going to research the general conventions of music videos. After picking our song we need to research our genre and theme For research we will interview people and also give out questionnaires related to our theme and Genre. This will allow us to discover who our main target audience is.
Music Video Proposal -
With our analysis on audience research we will brainstorm ideas on what the viewer want. They should also compliment our chosen theme. We want to create an unconventional music video therefore we have to think out side the box however, the lyrics should also relate to the video at certain points.
Script Development -
During the development, we will produce a scene by scene script; with information on each scene. Also we will investigate what camera shots and angles we can use in each scene to gain the maximum potential.
Preproduction –
We will now organize the props needed for each scene, the costumes, the locations and the actors. We would like to use people in our group as the main actors. We want our video to be based on the aspects that are already presented in the song.
Shoot –
Book the video cameras, tripods, lights, still cameras and drama studio. We will film the scenes. In sections of what locations are the closest to each other.
Day 1 & 2
Shoot & Editing –
Finish filming and begin to upload only material we need on to Final Cut pro. Start arranging to the storyboard order. Finish with editing the production, inset special effects, sound and transformations.
Production Feedback –
Show our music video to target audience, produce and distribute questionnaires for feedback. Correct problems viewers think need work on.
Print Production –
We will research on other album covers and magazine covers in genre and theme. Then design our own covers and magazine covers directly relating to our music video.
Final Proposal –
Final presentation of our ideas; music video, album and magazine covers. Evaluating our work
Blog –
Present our ideas, pre production, production and final work on.

Brief:
In this project we are going to produce a music video and promo.
We each have our own roles in the group.
Director, Camera women & Assistant Editor - Misha Shah
I believe my role as Director entails me to visualise the screenplay, control the making/ production of the film (mainly the artistic aspects) while guiding the technical crew (Camera crew, Editor, etc) and the actors to help me create my vision of the music video. My role as the main camera women is closely linked to the role of Director as I am responsible for approving camera angles, lens effects, lighting, locations and set designs. The mise en scene is important in creating the atmosphere of the music video therefore a great effort is needed in ensuring these aspects are realistic and professional. My last role as Assistant Editor is also heavily connected to my other roles; director and camera man. As a Director I am able to aid the editor in what clips I want in the music video and what camera shots are best in creating atmosphere. I also am going to edit the music video in some sessions.
